An Ayurvedic wellness retreat on the quiet far shore of Begnas Lake, reached by boat.
Welcome to Begnas Lake Resort
Buffered by tropical jungle on three sides and the lake on the fourth, we sit only eleven kilometres from Pokhara and yet feel a world away, an otherworldly paradise with no through-road, no traffic and no rush. Most of the team are from the villages around the lake, always ready to make a stay the best it can be.
Days here are unhurried. Swim in the chemical-free pool or the pristine lake, watch the fishermen go about their morning, walk out to the villages, or head off for mountain biking, paragliding and trail running. Reception opens onto an airy dining room, a terrace with the view and a cosy bar, with two conference halls when a group needs them, and the city only a short drive away.

Ayurveda
Our therapists ask, watch, take your pulse and write a plan, not only therapies, but food, breath and the shape of your day. Nothing here is chosen from a menu.
Consultation
Pulse, constitution and the three doshas, read before anything else happens.
Shamana
The gentle therapies: herbal remedies, massage, diet and rest.
Sodhan
Deeper purification, for longer stays and under daily supervision.
Yoga
Twice daily, Patanjali and Hatha, on the terrace above the water.
The rooms
River stone, wood, terracotta and slate. Rooms built low among the gardens, each with its own porch, the door left open to the sound of the water and the birds.

Waterfront Cottages
18 m² · Standalone · Lake & forest
On the far fringes of the property, with wide porches and a great deal of privacy. For solo travellers and couples.

Premier
32 m² · Balcony · Bathtub & rain shower
The newest rooms. Open plan, generous seating, a private balcony to take breakfast on.

Classic
27 m² · Private porch
Four rooms to a cottage, built in traditional style, each with its own way out into the gardens.

Bungalows
2 × 27 m² · Poolside
Two bungalows flanking the chemical-free pool. Interconnecting rooms, arguably the best position on the property.
Dining
Almost everything comes from the Ayurvedic and organic garden a few steps from the kitchen door. The cooks are trained to draw the medicinal properties out of the plants, so food becomes part of the treatment rather than a course beside it.
From 7 am
Fruit, curd, chiya on the terrace
Whatever ripened this week, honey from the hill above the lake, and tea while the water is still flat.
Midday
Dal bhat, as it should be
Rice, lentils, three or four garden vegetables, pickle. Served until you wave it away.
Afternoon
Whatever the garden gave up
A plate of cucumber and tomato, lemon soda, eaten in the shade with nowhere to be.
Evening
Cooked to your prescription
If the therapists have written a diet, the kitchen follows it. If not, the wood-fired grill and the bar are both open.

Experiences

Simal Danda · 2 hrs
Nothing here is strenuous. Movement is only another way of resting.
Simal Danda
A gentle village walk through forest and sun, for talking to people rather than covering ground.
Rupa Lake
Birdsong, water, and as far as you feel like going. Turn back whenever you like.
Begnaskot
The highest hill above the lake at 1,200 m. On a clear morning, three peaks over 8,000 m.
The chemical-free pool
Or the lake itself. Long afternoons, no lengths counted.
The place
Eleven kilometres from Pokhara, and it feels like another country. Water that goes flat as glass by six, forest thick enough to hold the noise out, and a horizon that changes colour four times before lunch.
The guest book
Almost everyone mentions the same two things: how long they slept, and how much longer they stayed than they meant to.
